CIB Explained
CIB, or Complete in Box, is a collecting term that describes a game that includes all its original components: the box or case, the game cartridge or disc, the instruction manual, and any other pack-in items that were originally included such as maps, posters, or registration cards. The key distinction is that a CIB game has been opened -- it is not sealed. Despite being opened, CIB games are highly collectible because they represent a complete original product.
CIB vs. Other Conditions
The collecting community uses several standard condition terms. "Sealed" means the game is still in its original factory wrapping. "CIB" means it has been opened but all original components are present. "Boxed" means the box is present but some components may be missing. "Loose" means just the game cartridge or disc without the box or manual. Each step down in completeness generally corresponds to a lower market value.

Why CIB Games Are Popular
CIB games offer an excellent balance of collectibility and accessibility. They are significantly more affordable than sealed copies while still providing the complete collecting experience -- you can admire the box art, read the manual, and know you have the complete package. For many collectors, CIB is the sweet spot that allows them to build a comprehensive collection without the premium prices that sealed copies demand.
Grading CIB Games
Professional grading evaluates each component of a CIB game individually, then assigns an overall grade. This means the box, manual, and game media each receive their own sub-grade. A CIB game in excellent condition with high sub-grades across all components can still be a very valuable collectible. Grading also authenticates the game, ensuring all components are genuine and original to that specific release.
